We’ve all been there. We go to snap a picture and are notified that our phone is running out of storage. And we all know that feeling of panic that sets in when we can’t save something we really wanted to keep. It can be really frustrating when our phone starts to fill up, especially since it seems like new apps and updates are constantly taking up more and more space. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! In this article, we’ll outline some simple ways to clear up space on your iPhone when you’re running out of storage.
FIRST, FIGURE OUT WHAT’S EATING UP YOUR STORAGE
You know that sinking feeling you get when you realize your iPhone is almost out of storage? We're here to help. First, figure out what's taking up the most space on your phone. To do this, head to Settings, click on General, and tap iPhone Storage. There, you'll find a helpful breakdown of the files, media, and apps eating up your space. Start deleting accordingly! At a minimum, aim to delete at least 2GB of storage so you'll have space to install more apps and take photos.
BACK UP YOUR PHOTOS AND VIDEOS WITH A CLOUD STORAGE SERVICE
If you're like most iPhone users, you're quickly running out of storage space. And in all likelihood, the photos and videos you've been taking are a big part of the problem. So what can you do? You could start by deleting some of your old photos and videos. But if you're not ready to say goodbye to them forever, back them up to a cloud storage service instead. That way, you can delete them from your iPhone without losing them completely. Apple's iCloud is a great option for this, and we have a tutorial that will show you how to back up your photos and videos using iCloud.
DELETE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS YOU SENT OR RECEIVED FROM OTHERS
If you’re running low on storage space on your iPhone and you don’t want to delete any of your apps, photos or music, you’ll need to start deleting some messages. Tap on Settings, then General | Review Large Attachments. Here, you’ll see a list of photos and videos you’ve sent or received in messages. You can delete them by placing your thumb on one, swiping to the left.
GET RID OF OLD TEXT MESSAGES
If your iPhone is starting to feel a little cramped, it might be time to start deleting some old files. When it comes to freeing up space, we recommend starting with text messages. On the topic of text messages, click on your Messages app and delete old conversations you don’t need anymore. Your iPhone can also automatically delete messages if you’d like. Just head to Settings, scroll down and tap on Messages, and then click on the Keep Messages option under Message History. There, you’ll be able to choose whether you’d like your phone to keep messages for 30 days, one year, or forever.
DELETE OR OFFLOAD APPS YOU’VE NOT USED FOR AWHILE
One of the quickest and easiest ways to clear up some space on your iPhone is to delete or offload apps you haven't used in a while. To delete an app, just head to Settings and find the app you want to get rid of. If you don't want to lose any data associated with that app, you can offload it instead. To do that, just head back to Settings, click on General, and once again tap on iPhone Storage. Click on the app and select Offload App.
ADD SITE LINKS TO YOUR HOME SCREEN INSTEAD OF KEEPING APPS
There was a time when I had an ancient 32GB iPhone and constantly ran out of storage. I was forced to delete pretty much all of my apps, which made me realize there were a few I only used because they stored certain files I needed. For example, I would access files on Google Drive a lot, but it was even easier and faster to access them this way, rather than constantly opening up and digging through Google Drive for them. So, the next time you're running low on storage space, try adding site links to your home screen instead of keeping apps.
After following these five tips, you should have freed up a decent amount of storage on your iPhone. If you’re still experiencing problems with storage, it might be time to upgrade to a model with more storage – or invest in a cloud storage service so you can keep your photos and videos backed up.
